Allies for Efficiency: Designing for Efficiency in a Mixed-Use Space

November 14, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

38 NW Davis is a LEED v4 Gold certified mixed-use building that blends with the aesthetics of Portland’s historic Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood yet stands out as a beacon of new development. The building’s L-shaped configuration surrounds the existing Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and uses honest materials like mass timber, brick, metal and cast iron to anchor it to the site.

The building offers a unique experience for each of its four occupancy types, yet its systems complement one another to achieve a high level of energy and water efficiency. A decoupled mechanical system provides dedicated outside air in conjunction with operable windows for mixed-mode ventilation capability, while ceiling fans promote air distribution and allow for expanded comfort zones during summer cooling. Heating and cooling loads are reduced by continuous insulation in the walls, and additional heating and cooling are provided by a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system. Lighting systems include a mix of discretional and non-discretional control approaches, with circadian lighting being tested in some areas.

Join the building’s project team for an inside look at how they approached energy- and water-sharing opportunities to realize deeper savings in Oregon’s first LEED v4 project. The project team will discuss the new rating system and how it benefits energy performance in new construction projects.

Professionals taking this training in-person in Portland, OR are eligible for 2 AIA LU/HSW continuing education credits; those viewing the webinar training are eligible for 1 AIA LU/HSW credit.

Course Objectives:
  • Develop mechanical solutions for mixed-use buildings to maximize performance and minimize energy use
  • Understand approaches for water efficiency in mixed-use buildings
  • Learn how project teams can apply energy-related improvements to the LEED v4 rating system
  • Identify energy-related incentives available to project teams to finance energy efficiency measures
